Liverpool to sign £50m striker
Well, this is what we’re all hoping, but for that kind of money, who will Brendan Rodgers and his Transfer Committee trust to get good value for such a considerable outlay? Let’s face it, there are two chances of getting a like-for-like replacement for Luis Suarez: Fat Chance and No Chance. So I think it’s worth taking a gander at who’s out there and what they’d bring to the Liverpool side. I’ve sent my scouting team – known best to you as Youtube.com, to bring a few glimpses of the best four from the current speculation. So first up…
Radamel Falcao – Apart from being the namesake of the 1980’s Brazilian midfielder Roberto what else can the 28 year-old Columbian bring? Well, oodles of skill for a start as the video shows. Another thing to note is that he’s a very strong lad and this will help him in the rough and tumble of the premiership. A very instinctive and individual operator so he’s similar to Suarez in that respect. Downside: The fact that he can land David Luis on his backside is not the most of difficult of tasks, however. And, can he get a red hairband?
Wilfried Bony – Probably the most likely of the four to arrive at Anfield. A player with whom all Reds followers should be familiar and I’d be hard-pushed to find someone who’d disagree with this choice. What’s refreshing to see from Bony’s video over the previous from Falcao is that he actually passes the ball and as such makes him infinitely more attractive as a team player and someone who will contribute to the entire cause rather than his own. Downside: Only one in that will Swansea sell the 25 year-old Ivory Coast international?
Marco Reus – Probably my favourite player in Europe right now. The 25 year-old German equivalent of David Beckham. The Borussia Dortmund number 11 has everything. Skill, vision, intelligence, strength and guile. As the scouting team video shows, I ‘aint lyin! This young man would be as good a player for Liverpool as any great name from the club’s past including your Keegan’s, your Dalglish’s and Barnes’s. A nice to have and a need to have. Downside: Dortmund are reluctant to sell this year but, as they say, everything has a price!
Edinson Cavani – At 27 years-old the Uruguayan may be a little on the “old” side (says the mid 40’s year-old writer!) bearing in mind the much vaunted FSG transfer policy. Like his South American counterpart Falcao, can rarely be seen passing the ball so I’m not sure if this is really the type of player Liverpool need. Add to that the fact that he’s very tall and not that mobile surprises me that the Reds boss is looking at such a player for a position other than defence. Downside: His strike partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic was injured yesterday so it’s unlikely Paris St. Germain will do business now.
Having looked at all of those, I still feel Reus would be the best option for Liverpool, subject to availability. If I was a betting man though, I’d place my hard-earned on the Swansea front man Bony joining the Liverpool attack and looking at the scouting report and from what I’ve seen in general from Bony, he’d make an exceedingly good addition to the Reds’ squad.
