Taxi for Rodgers?
I’ll make my own statement now and say an emphatic NO! However, there is clearly a growing portion of Liverpool fans who would get onto the blower right now to get Brendan Rodgers on his way.
I was surprised to see this on the Liverpool-Kop website this morning, but sadly, I’m not surprised and have to agree. Poor summer signings and bad tactics have contributed to the current wave of indifference toward the Northern Irishman. I think the 30% apparently in favour of his departure is probably about right in view of the teams slump this season.
Yesterday on the LFC file I looked at the current state of affairs in the wake of the weekend’s defeat to Newcastle and pointed out that Rodgers has most definitely made a rod for his own back. I was disappointed to see the way the team played and the total lack of invention on display from Liverpool. For a side that had such a winning formula last season, it’s startling to see how things have gone. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Does the departure of Luis Suarez indicate that the team needs to be dismantled?
Much analysis showed last season that Liverpool were just as, if not more effective without the Uruguayan than with him. Rodgers has not done himself any favours in making the level of change that he did over the summer. I would definitely argue the squad, at this moment is weaker than last year. The only difference is that it’s (apparently) bigger in terms of numbers.
For me, this season is a write-off already. The team had better enjoy the Champions League adventure whilst they can because it doesn’t look as if it’s going to continue next season. As for fourth place, well that’s slipping by the week. The only chance for Rodgers now is that Daniel Sturridge can hit the kind of form he had last season and that’s going to be at least Christmas by the time he’s properly match fit and up to speed. Injuries permitting of course!
Fact is, Rodgers has the job and for me, he deserves time. Last season should be seen for what it was, a lucky break and a run of form that surprised everybody but the players. I’d put the manager in the everybody box, too.
Real Madrid awaits tonight. Word is Raheem Sterling, Mario Balotelli and Steven Gerrard will be rested tonight and it’s not soon enough in my opinion. The League is our bread and butter and we’ve let that fall far enough away as it is. Let’s just hope, for his sake, that Rodgers has finally taken heed.
