Liverpool vs Arsenal Match Preview
Following on from 1-0 and 4-2 wins against Crystal Palace and Hoffenheim respectively, Liverpool will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins at Anfield for this season when they come up against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Liverpool will be looking to defend their 100% win record at Anfield for this season. Arsenal meanwhile, will be hoping for an immediate response after their 1-0 loss at the hands of Stoke City last Saturday in the league. Unlike Jürgen Klopp’s side, who have had to play a midweek match, Arsene Wenger’s men come into this encounter fairly fresh and will be looking to gain their first away win for the season.
Last Meeting: Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal (04th March 2017).
Our last Premier League meeting at Anfield resulted in a 3-1 win for the Reds. Goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Georgino Wijnaldum ensured Liverpool took all three points. That result proved vital in the race for a top 4 place in the league. Recent encounters between both clubs have seen some high scoring classics over the past few years.
Last season Liverpool managed to do the double over the Gunners, with a 4-3 win at the Emirates on the opening day of the season ahead of the 3-1 win at Anfield in the March. The Reds are undefeated against Arsenal in the league for the past 2 years. Arsenal’s last win at Anfield came all the way back in 2012.
Team and Injury News
After the midweek Champions League 2nd leg tie, Klopp may be looking to rotate his squad again for this encounter. Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, James Milner and Daniel Sturridge are all in contention to start against Arsenal. Liverpoool however, will still be without Phil Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne due to injuries. Youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold is also struggling with a dead leg.
Arsenal received a boost when Wenger announced in his pre match press conference on Thursday that both Alexis Sanchez and Laurent Koscielny are both available to play a part in this encounter. It remains to be seen whether both make the starting eleven or start on the bench. The visitors will still be without long term absentees Jack Wilshere and Santi Carzola.
Predicted Lineup
LFC (4-3-3): Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Robertson, Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Salah.
ARS (3-4-3): Cech, Mustafi, Koscielny, Kolasinac, Monreal, Ramsey, Xhaka, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ozil, Sanchez, Lacazette.
Prediction
Liverpool 2 – 2 Arsenal. – This game looks like being another high scoring encounter between two teams who have very fluid attacks. However, both team backlines are still shaky and both teams will open each other up time and time again during the encounter. A high scoring draw looks on the cards on Sunday afternoon.
