Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC – Match Preview

Jürgen Klopp and his Liverpool team travel down to the Smoke this weekend to take on Arsenal at the Emirates stadium. Three precious points will be at stake. This fixture has thrown up plenty of thrills and spills in the past so hopefully, this one will be no different.

Overview

Liverpool should be confident of taking on one of London’s finest. Still unbeaten in the league including games against Manchester City and Chelsea already behind them. Their hosts, on the other hand, haven’t enjoyed such form.

Arsenal have lost twice so far this season against… yes City and then a week later Chelsea. Therefore you’d be correct in thinking that the omens are firmly against the Gunners. However. Since losing 3-2 to Chelsea, Unai Emery has guided his new team without loss and winning every game barring the draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Liverpool have won only once in their last five league visits to Arsenal so it’s clear to see how tough this game is to call.

Team News

Liverpool won’t risk Jordan Henderson and Naby Keïta for tomorrow’s game. They remain in the treatment room along with ex-Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster.

Therefore, it’s likely that Xherdan Shaqiri will start against an attack-minded Arsenal side. In addition, I’d expect James Milner to return to the side in place of Adam Lallana who was less than spectacular last time out against Huddersfield – to put it mildly! The only other permutation I can see to that would be Fabinho coming for one of these two in order to provide for some defensive cover.

The hosts have a somewhat different situation. According to the current information, Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac, Hector Bellerin and Konstantinos Mavropanos are all doubtful for this fixture. Only Laurent Koscielny has returned to training from those recently injured. Not good news for Emery in what is going to be a tough test for him. Especially when one considers that all of these players are defenders!

Betting

This is arguably the game of the weekend and it’s as big a game as it is tough to call. In all honesty, this one could go either way. Check the prices and give it a whirl. You never know…

In Summary

This should be a fantastic match for the neutral. In view of the history and status of these two rivals, this could even be considered as a derby. Current form tends to be irrelevant in these games. Often there will be one pivotal moment that decides the game. Let’s hope this decision falls in favour of the visitors.

I’m hoping we have a nice open game tomorrow and under Arsene Wenger, we usually got this in this fixture. I’ll be interested to see how the new boss Emery approaches this one. So, just to finish off, here are some of the best bits from times gone by.
