Liverpool F.C. vs Everton F.C. – Match Preview

Liverpool welcome their neighbours Everton from the blue half of the city to Anfield for tomorrow’s derby. This fixture has certainly thrown up some classics over the years. Hopefully, this one will be no different.

Overview

Liverpool have been unbeaten in the last five fixtures against Everton. Winning three and drawing two means the bluenoses will have to be at their best and better to get the win tomorrow. Especially against a Reds side that remains unbeaten in the league this season after 14 games.

Everton, on the other hand, have lost three games so far, whilst drawing four and winning six. Not a great run of form, although they are unbeaten in their last seven games. Statistics, however, are no indicator in these games.

The form book can be thrown out of the window for these games, as the local bragging rights and not just three points will be at stake.

Team News

Jürgen Klopp will be without Adam Lallana who continues to struggle with injury. It’s unlikely the attacking midfielder would have been used in any case, judging by his recent (poor) performances. Jordan Henderson is suspended following his red card last time out.

I’d like to see Joe Gomez return to the starting line up. He was sidelined during the week as “a precaution”. The mere sight of Dejan Lovren’s name on the team sheet fills me with dread. Tomorrow’s game is a must-win whilst the blues from Manchester go rolling on.

Everton on the other hand, have different concerns. Marco Silva beat Liverpool as Hull man anger and was in charge of Watford last season when his side secured a memorable comeback. Can he bring his club their first victory of the century against the Reds? He’ll certainly be confident.

Summary

This should be an entertaining encounter. It won’t be pretty that’s for sure. All being well, there’ll be goals and more of them for the men in red than blue.

There’s no doubt the Reds have not been at their clinical best this season. Personally, I blame this on the World Cup. The team’s best players were all involved and have looked shadows of their former selves since then.

They’ve ground out results. This is for sure, but their needs to be some more convincing performances in my view. There is definitely a spark missing from the midfield. Naby Keïta has failed to live up to expectations despite a promising start. The absence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is definitely missing.

Klopp was annoyed when this was put to him this week. “Bringing one player in would change everything?” he asked. “That’s bullsh%t, and you know it…” Sometimes the truth hurts. I just hope it hurts enough to prove the doubters wrong tomorrow.
