Liverpool F.C. – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – Gameweek 5

The Reds get it right, defeating the men in black and white. Although they conceded only one, we’d welcome the return of Alisson. With youngsters you never know, but is it wise to let them go? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at the world’s favourite football club Liverpool F.C.

The Good

The winning start continues. The Reds recorded an impressive 3-1 win against Newcastle United at Anfield. A brace for Sadio Mané and a late Mo Salah strike was enough to cancel out Jetro Willem’s early goal.

Steve Bruce set his side up to stifle Liverpool, playing five defenders across the back. It looked for a while as it was going to pay off when Willem turned Trent Alexander-Arnold and fired a rasping past Adrian. However, there is a lethal look to the Reds this season which meant the Magpies’ joy would be short-lived.

“We had some time to set the rhythm, we had to play much quicker and then we had chances. We scored two wonderful goals.

After 28 minutes, the hosts were level again when Mané picked up Andy Robertson’s pass and curled a beauty into the top corner. The introduction of Roberto Firmino for the injured Divock Origi shortly before half time meant things could only get worse for their visitors. That man again, Mané was on hand to send Liverpool into the interval with a 2-1 lead.

The second half was really a question of damage limitation for Newcastle as they camped in their own half with little or no intention – let alone possibility to leave their own half. On 70 minutes, Salah latched on to Firmino’s Brazilian skills (smuggled back from his international duty during the week), to slot home the third and seal the points for Liverpool. “Two wonderful goals” purred Jürgen Klopp in the post-match interview.

The Bad

The teams inability to keep a clean sheet at the moment. Granted, they haven’t lost a game, but the defence certainly needs to improve. With all due respect to Newcastle, a better defence would have had Liverpool in problems.

Adrian has done alright so far. He hasn’t been to blame for the most part. It just looks as if Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip don’t have quite the understanding as the former alongside Joe Gomez. Andy Robertson and Alexander-Arnold also don’t look as if they’re firing on all cylinders at the moment either.

Against Newcastle, Klopp admitted, “We played them onside for the goal unfortunately and that made the game not easy“. Not wrong. These kind of lapses need to be eradicated from their performances if they’re to truly maintain this form and mount a serious challenge this season.

The Ugly

The selling of Ryan Kent to Rangers. Many would think the club should held on to him a little longer… perhaps gave him more of a chance. It’s apparent that some young players simply have the wrong attitude. Kent ranks among those.

The problem is, as with many ordinary fans, we don’t often see the real issues behind the scenes. Kent claimed this week that he was “lied” to by the club following his transfer to Rangers. He claimed the club promised him a move.

To say the they lied, simply when he didn’t get the move he wanted – when he wanted it, is a tad absurd. Kent has to realise the club has been there a long, long time before him and will likely be there a long, long time after also. Why, because the good of the club always comes first.

If a deal isn’t good for the club, it can’t be done. Simple. Surely Kent and his agent realised that? The worst thing about the situation is that he has made the allegation after the move went through. Therefore nobody lied to him. He actually got what he wanted. D’uh!
