LFC Transfer Window Update II – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Welcome to another transfer window update. What’s happened since our last check? Here’s a round up of the The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Liverpool’s transfer market endeavours for this week.

The Good

The fact that no business has been done since Kostas Tsimikas signed from Olympiakos. The reason why this is Good, is simply that it means the club is not in a hurry to get more bums on seats. They don’t need to. In this case, no news, being good news certainly is the case.

Jürgen Klopp appears keen to step up the development of the current group of youngsters who are on the fringes of the first team. Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliot being the most prominent. Specifically Jones, who was named in the starting eleven against VfB Stuttgart yesterday. The biggest significance of this is that the 19 year-old was selected to partner Fabinho and Naby Keïta, ahead of Gini Wijnaldum.

With the increasingly impressive performances of Naby Keïta in midfield, there is even less reason for Klopp to go to the transfer market. The Guinean is starting to fulfil the promise he’s shown only in glimpses so far and the squad will be undoubtedly stronger for it.

The Bad

Rumours of the potential sale of Wijnaldum to Barcelona following the appointment of Ronald Koeman as Barcelona boss.

The team’s number 5 has been without doubt one of the most consistent players since his arrival from Newcastle in 2016. The Dutchman’s two-goal performance against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-final was arguably his best game in the red jersey of Liverpool.

Much has been made of the claim that the club needs to sell players in order to bring in new faces. However, I’d have thought Xherdan Shaqiri Marco Grugić and – sadly, Harry Wilson should bring in more than enough to raise funds for their targets. Most notable of whom being Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara. However, the alternate story – more realistic, is regarding the harmony in the dressing room should yet another midfielder arrive.

Let’s see what happens. Personally I’d prefer to keep Wijnaldum. However, the above reasons and the fact that the 29 year-old Dutch international has so far avoided new contract discussions better than an old aged pensioner would the corona ward in the local hospital. It does seem that he has other plans but unlike many before him, is being very ‘diplomatic‘ on the subject.

Ultimately, if he goes, he goes. Life goes on and the club will survive. I just feel there are other players more worthy of the exit door than him.

The Ugly

One to put the cat among the pigeons” he said. You can say that again. Former Reds striker Stan Collymore has started a stinker of a debate in his column in the Mirror.

In view of the fact that Manchester City are unable to succeed in their quest to win the Champions League – being dumped out this season by Lyon this week, Collymore has cheekily suggested City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne should swap the blue of Manchester for the Red of Liverpool.

What a coup that would be?! De Bruyne was apparently a Liverpool supporter as a youngster so looking at his boyhood club’s success from the outside must be as welcome as a fly in your soup.

In reality, this as about as likely to happen as me turning out for Liverpool’s first team when the new season starts on 12th September. Overall, credit to Stan the Man for coming up with this one. Not quite genius, but worth it just for the audacity.
