LFC Transfer Window Update IV – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
A quiet week on the transfer front. No big names have either come or gone. However, Jürgen Klopp and LFC clearly have one eye on the future. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Liverpool’s transfer market activity this week.
The Good
This week, Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market, despite the fact that a number of potential big moves seem to have stalled.
Three fresh-faced youngsters were unveiled at the academy this week. Polish goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek and midfielders Mateusz Musialowski and Melkamu Frauendorf arrived from FC Wroclaw, SMS Lodz and Hoffenheim respectively.
All three come with the usual expectation that accompanies a youth player at Liverpool, ie. a lot. It’s clear the Reds are building for the future. However, as a wise man once said, the future is nothing without the present. Thus, we move on to…

The Bad
As the noise surrounding Gini Wijnaldum grows, there is little sign of any development either. Just paper talk after paper talk.
Apparently Liverpool have put a (measly) £15m for the 29 year-old. Talk is that the club will sell to raise funds to buy Thiago Alcantara as a replacement. A similar player, similar age but likely to cost £10m more…? Am I missing something? I’m not sure Alcantara is £10m more of a player than Wijnaldum. Let’s see what happens, but it wouldn’t surprise me if neither deal gets done.
The Ismaila Sarr topic seems to have gone quiet despite last week there being claims that LFC were prepared to meet Watford’s valuation. Again, let’s see what gives. Personally though, I prefer quality over quantity.

The Ugly
The incessant clamour for Liverpool to make signings. Every day Liverpool are being linked with player after player. The logic being that as Champions, they need to make some kind of Hollywood signing. To stay on top. This actually, is nonesense.
During last summer’s transfer window it was the same thing. The club bought no new players, were criticised. They went on to win the league at a canter. Takumi Minamino being the only addition in January. There’s a recurring theme here.
Liverpool are clearly not in a rush to go out and buy simply to keep up with the Jones’s. This we’ve seen year in, year out. Chelsea have spent a reported £200m on six new players (so far) this window. I’m not sure how Frank Lampard will integrate so many new players into his team and I’d rather he than Jürgen Klopp be in that position.
I maintain that Thiago Alcantara is not the kind of player Liverpool need. Fact is LFC are bursting with midfielders. Especially with the likes of Curtis Jones coming through and Naby Keïta coming into his own. Not to mention Harvey Elliot impressing in the recent friendly 7-2 win over Blackpool.
I trust in FSG. Should Wijnaldum leave, I have no doubt the club will have a solution as they’ve proved emphatically to date. Liverpool FC is now very well run compared to former times. They have a huge wage bill, ground improvements and redevelopment at Kirkby to support. The team is currently very strong so Klopp only needs to improve the squad. I don’t believe hunger is an issue here, either.
The message: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Winning the league by 18 points? Doesn’t seem too broke to me.
Another Wembley defeat on penalties and more calls for new signings. A year ago #LFC didn’t buy but still flourished en route to winning the title.
Can they really kick on again without more investment in the squad? A look at what they really need. https://t.co/TUMuGfKfm9— James Pearce (@JamesPearceLFC) August 30, 2020
