LFC 20/21 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – Gameweek 33
Not much good to write about, another draw points to nowt. Again two points go sailing by, one has to ask: why? Despite the greed of the bosses, the club posts millions in losses. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at the world’s favourite football club Liverpool F.C.
The Good
Frankly nothing. The team are out of every competition that Pep Lijnders was at pains to say Liverpool would “attack” back in September.
Since losing the Champions League quarterfinal to Real Madrid, Liverpool have shown no signs of reminding the footballing world that until May at least, they remain Premier League Champions.
For what it’s worth, this is what they are. Their performances however, have been nothing but convincing. A prime example being…

The Bad
Throwing away yet another lead. This time to Newcastle United who were able to pull a goal back to secure a 1-1 draw.
Mo Salah was on target early on to give the Reds the lead after three minutes. Liverpool were unable to make their possessional advantage count and, as the game wore on, they were more and more bereft of ideas.
And so their visitors smelt blood the more the game went on. Callum Wilson had a headed effort ruled out for handball and STILL Liverpool were unable to close the game out.
On 95 minutes, what the world and his wife (including the Liverpool team) feared came to pass. Joe Willcock fired home a deflected effort with what must have been the last kick of the game. Rotten luck for the Reds. Luck, they say… you make your own.
“We have another five games and we will see. We learn or we don’t play Champions League, that’s it,”

Jürgen Klopp bemoaned the team but hit the nail on the head. “We have another five games and we will see. We learn or we don’t play Champions League, that’s it,” said the boss. Can’t argue with that. It’s really up to the players to show how much they want it.
The Ugly
The club reported a loss of around £46m for the year ending May 2020. Why these figures are only reported now, I’ve no idea. These numbers will include the effects of the first wave of the pandemic so we can only speculate on the total effect up to now.
Considering the club recently announced the deal with Red Bird Capital – reportedly in the region of £500m, I doubt John W. Henry and his crew will be too concerned after covering the loss 10 times over.
Looking on the bright side, it’s likely that Liverpool will be active in the transfer market, now their coffers have been swelled by Red Bird. Rumours abound that RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate is on the verge of signing and Yves Bissouma is a possibility from Brighton. Even Jadon Sancho has been touted. However, as Liverpool seem content on throwing away any chance of finishing in the top four, it’s likely the young south Londoner will look elsewhere.
It’s expected then that the Reds will make significant additions this summer on the back of what can only be described as a disappointing title defence. The team is a world away from where they were 12 months ago.

A trip down the East Lancs Road to visit the noisy neighbours and then that’s it for another week. Exciting times at Liverpool right now.
