LFC 20/21 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – Gameweek 34

It hasn’t happened in a while, three points to raise a smile. Hovering in sixth place, now it’s the Europa League race. Fans run riot, and stop the game after disquiet. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at the world’s favourite football club Liverpool F.C.

The Good

Securing three points for the first time in three games. The 2-0 win against Southampton was a laboured affair, as Liverpool rode their luck better than Lester Piggott rode a winner at the Grand National.

Alisson Becker recovering from a couple of blunders and poor finishing from the visitors combined to give Liverpool a much needed points boost.

A welcome goal from Thiago was nice to see, although his worth still divides fans. Sadio Mané was again on the scoresheet as his recovery from his goal drought gathers pace.

The fledgling defensive duo of Nathan Phillips and Rhys Williams managed to keep a clean sheet. A welcome boost their confidence, as well as giving Jürgen Klopp food for thought. The club will ponder the transfer market this summer to seek back-up for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

The Bad

Despite the win, Liverpool remain well off the pace in the race to qualify for Europe. The current sixth place will leave them empty-handed. One point behind West Ham in fifth and a two wins away from Leicester City.

More than 100 per cent. Without winning games we have no chance of having European football.

Jürgen Klopp

The last two drawn games against Newcastle and Leeds have pretty much finished any lingering embers of hope, of Champions League qualification. Liverpool are now in the unenviable position of having to have to beat Manchester United to even play in Europe, let alone a place in the top competition.

The Ugly

The postponing of the Manchester United game last weekend. The game was called off after the club couldn’t restore damage done after game broke into the ground to protest about owners.

Hopefully the rescheduled game will take place tonight. This is a must win game for Liverpool if they wish to salvage anything from a season which has been derailed through injury and poor form to key players.

Given the contrast in recent fortunes for both clubs, it’s reasonable to conclude Liverpool have between fat chance and no chance of getting anything from this fixture.
