LFC 20/21 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – Gameweeks 35-37

It’s beginning to be fun, the start of a winning run. Noisy neighbours swept aside, Clarets and Baggies have nowhere to hide. Who finishes fourth nobody can say, so it all comes down to the final day. The Good, The Not Bad and The Smugly. Another week reviewed at Liverpool F.C.

The Good

Accumulating three wins on the bounce. Firstly, The dismantling of Manchester United 2-4 in their own backyard.

Two goals from Roberto Firmino in between an opener from Diogo Jota and a last minute effort from Mo Salah, was enough to cancel out the Manyoo opening goal from Bruno Fernandes after 10 minutes – and later snuff out Marcus Rashford’s attempt to get the hosts back into the game on 68 minutes.

To be fair, I like many other Liverpool fans didn’t give them much hope before the game. However since the 2-0 win at home against Southampton it has to be said that Jürgen Klopp’s men look a different side.

The (Not) Bad

Following the United win with victories against West Bromwich Albion (1-2) and Burnley (0-3). Again, both victories were thoroughly deserved.

The pick of the two is the defeat a of the Baggies where Alisson Becker scored a last minute header to give Liverpool the three points. A stunning end to an enthralling encounter.

The Burnley match simply underlined how much more settled the side is with Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips continuing their progress as the preferred central defensive pairing.

A Man of the Match performance from Phillips showed how the academy graduate has played a pivotal role since coming in a first team with the multitude of injuries this term. In so doing he has contributed massively to the team returning to the top four.

The (Smugly)

Following their recent run of form, Liverpool now sit in fourth place. However, it’s not all plain sailing now.

The Reds are currently tied with Leicester City on 66 points and separated by four-goal goal difference advantage.

The irony here is that former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers could either get one over his old employers or, give them a timely reminder of what they let go. They will take on Tottenham who, to be fair have done pretty well since getting rid of Jose Mourinho. Caretaker Ryan Mason has guided them to seventh place.

Klopp will host Crystal Palace’s at Anfield where 10,000 fans will cheer on his men. If ever there was a good time for the twelfth man to return to Anfield, this is surely it. The lack of fans at Anfield has undoubtedly contributed to a very challenging season for Liverpool.

One can never say for sure, but the record six loses on the bounce at the famous old ground could well be down to the lack of the legendary support.

It’s been a tricky season to navigate. Nobody could have foreseen the Liverpool’s defence of their first title in 30 years fall apart the way it has. Jürgen Klopp and his team have a chance to finish strongly and salvage their season. A test of character awaits.
