LFC 21/22 – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – Gameweek #3

The captain signs for more good times. The Reds held to a draw, but certainly no bore. The window closes with dissenting noises, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at the Liverpool football F.C.

The Good

This for me, was the captain signing a new contract with the club. Jordan Henderson’s new deal will keep him at the club until 35. Liverpool’s owners have sought to retain him where others have been let go.

The 31 year-old’s influence has forced the club to break with their unwritten rule of not keeping players beyond 30. However, with near-on 300 appearances clocked up whilst winning the Premiership, The Champions League, World Club Cup in the process the deal is a no-brainer for Liverpool and their owners.

Following a shaky start to life at Anfield, Henderson has shown his qualities after taking over the armband from Steven Gerrard. He joins Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams having all penned new deals.

The Bad

Not exactly the end of the world but the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield. After the Blues’ Reece James was sent off for handball in the first half, smart money would have been on Liverpool talking all three points. However the visitors had other ideas.

A demonstration of gutsy, world class defending (it has to be said) keep Liverpool at bay. To be fair Chelsea are looking like title contenders now Thomas Tuchel has taken the manager’s role.

The Reds are now fifth in the table after three games. These are very early days in the campaign and the marathon had merely started. My usual checkpoint of 10 games remains firmly in mind on a weekend where all of the generally accepted ‘contenders’ either lost or drew.

The Ugly

The furore over Liverpool only signing one player in the transfer window. But the fact is, the team is already being rebuilt.

The emergence of Harvey Elliot and the change in fortunes of Naby Keita following an impressive preseason and start to the campaign signals a change for the Reds. It’s no surprise that James Milner hasn’t played much this season as his playing time gives way too exciting talent.

There was a rumour of a late attempt to lure Yves Bissouma from Brighton, although this ultimately turned out to be unsuccessful.

In my humble opinion, Liverpool have a squad that is already good enough to win the league this season. providing there is no repeat of last season’s injury glut the team will definitely challenge.
