LFC 21/22 – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – Gameweeks #13 & 14

The saints are shown the door, duly hit for four. Same for the Blues who suffer the fans’ boos. Former Eagles owner bemoans a moaner. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at Liverpool Football Club.

The Good

Securing another three points after defeating Southampton 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday. A first half double from Diogo Jota and another from Thiago put this game beyond their opponents, long before Virgil van Dijk’s second half shot finished the Saints off.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted a tactical error on his part led to his players being embarrassed in a totally one-sided contest that was all but over by the break.

Liverpool capitalised on a confused Southampton side to put them to the sword early on. There was no coming back for their visitors, despite an improved second half performance.

Not much more to add really, other than a classy performance from Jota who is proving his £40m price tag to be a snip. The Portuguese international is becoming an integral part of the team and always looks as if he’s going to score. Speaking of which…

The (Not) Bad

Stuffing the noisy neighbours 1-4 at Goodison Park last night. This was indeed the feisty affair we’ve come to expect. However, the class of this Liverpool side was just too much for former boss Rafa Benitez and his men.

The four yellow cards picked up by Everton in the first half outlined the approach Benitez and his blue noses chose to employ in this 239th derby between two of the games biggest rivals.

Goals from Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah gave Liverpool an early lead, only for Demarai Gray to give the hosts hope going into the break.

“His second goal, you have to force these kind of mistakes. Mo put Coleman under pressure to win that ball…”

In the second half though, Liverpool we’re able to capitalise on mistakes from the Everton defence as Salah pounced for his second, to make it three. Something that Jürgen Klopp was eager to point out. “…His second goal, you have to force these kind of mistakes. Mo put Coleman under pressure to win that ball and from then on it is a good chance he will score.” said the boss.

The home fans had seen enough and began to leave the ground, many not hanging around to see Jota blast the fourth past Jordan Pickford at his near post. Those that stayed subjected the team to a chorus of boss. All over Austin Rover!

The result keeps the Reds in touch with Chelsea and Man City who both won on the night. Only two points separate the contenders as we head toward the decisive festive program.

The Ugly

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan tore into Jürgen Klopp on Talksport ahead of last night’s match.

Jordan was sceptical of Klopp’s comments regarding the physical nature of the fixture, calling them “Flaky”.

“It’s a big game, a Merseyside derby. If you can’t have a bit of blood and passion in one of the biggest games in English football…..really? Claimed the Talksport regular.

However, as it turned out, Klopp’s concerns were proved right with Everton clocking up four yellow cards before half time.

In fairness, I half agree with what Jordan says. However, when you consider the injuries that were inflicted in this fixture last season, I’m inclined to lean more in support of Klopp. Of course we want an entertaining game, but if we lose players too career-threatening injuries as a result, I can definitely see the manager’s point.
