LFC 21/22 – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – Gameweek #27

The Reds don’t rest on their laurels, as they reach the FA Cup quarter finals. In the league wham bam, and a win against West Ham. Liverpool’s cup draw gets a grin, but could also be a banana skin! The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at Liverpool football club.

The Good

Reaching the FA cup quarter finals for the first time in Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool reign. The 2-0 win over Norwich City courtesy of a Takumi Minamino double was enough to secure safe passage to the last eight. A late Lukas Rupp strike wasn’t sufficient to derail the Reds.

“It was an exceptional game of football,”

Japan international Minamino is turning out to be somewhat of a cup specialist after finishing as the top scorer in the Carabao Cup which the Reds recently won. “The two goals were great but all the rest he did was top class as well.” enthused Klopp after the final whistle. High praise indeed and thoroughly deserved.

The (Not) Bad

Keeping the pressure up on Champions elect Manchester City with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over West Ham at Anfield. Sadio Mané’s VAR-beating goal after 27 minuted turned out to be the winner.

This was a little harsh on West Ham. David Moyes has assembled a tough and resilient unit and they pushed Liverpool all of the way. Luis Diaz was the stand-out performer for a rusty looking Reds team.

The latest squad addition showed some superb touches and awareness to underline what potential the club have secured in winning the race for his signature.

So with City trouncing the fellow Mancunians 4-1, the gap remains six points with the Reds having a goal in hand. Let’s see who blinks first – if at all over the remaining 11 games.

The (Sm)Ugly

This should be the FA cup quarter-final draw. Liverpool will face Nottingham Forest in their last-eight match.

With all due respect to Forest, one has to see the Reds as favourites to go through, when considering other teams in the hat.

The draw reads as follows:

1 Crystal Palace v Everton
2 Nottingham Forest v Liverpool
3 Middlesbrough v Chelsea
4 Southampton v Manchester City

This has been kind to Liverpool without doubt and should the team perform as everybody knows they can, then further progress will be made. Still, in Forest, we’re looking at a team who trounced Leicester City 4-1 in the previous round and, remain three points off a playoff place in the Championship.

This won’t be a pushover. The match will be played at Forest’s City Ground where an enthusiastic home crowd will relish the chance to get over over one of their famous old rivals from years gone by.

Most fans over 50 will remember the teams of the ’70s ’80s and ’90s under the guidance of Brian Clough. Arguably one of the games greatest coaches of his time.
