LFC 21/22 – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – Gameweek #38
Number twenty just wasn’t to be, the players can stand tall because they gave it their all. Motivation from retribution is no contribution. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Another week reviewed at Liverpool Football Club.
The Good
The 3-1 win against Wolves that ensured finishing the season in second place. What’s so good about finishing in the top loser’s position? I hear you both (readers) saying.
Yes of course, I’d have loved to have been celebrating no. 20 along with every Liverpool fan on the planet, but sometimes it just isn’t meant to be. The team has done the domestic cup double this season which by any means is not to be sniffed at.
For most fans, the aim is “to be challenging” or “to be in the running”. It’s fair to say Liverpool are both of those things and more. The problem in this current era is that there happens to be a team of equal or arguably greater ability in Manchester City.
This game was befitting of a last game of the season decider. Even when Liverpool fell behind on three minutes, I knew they’d win the game. As news came on that Aston Villa were leading against City, I dared to dream. “Maybe this is our day” I thought.
When Sadio Mané levelled, I began to get excited. However, by the time Mo Salah fired Liverpool ahead after 84 minutes, it was academic because City were now in front against Villa. In the space of five minutes, the dream was beginning to fade.
Andy Robertson extended the lead in the last minute. I still had the faintest of hopes Steven Gerrard’s boys would come through for us with an equaliser, but alas it just wasn’t to be. Of course I was gutted but I realised the team had left themselves too much to do.

Perhaps you could blame the defeats to Leicester City or West Ham. The draw against Chelsea or Tottenham. Fact is that despite a points return that would have won most leagues in most seasons, when you’re up against Manchester City, you can’t afford any of those things.
So I’m happy with second. Not over the moon but I know next season we go again. The boys will be that little bit wiser, and that little bit stronger. We have plenty to look forward to and plenty to be proud of. And in any case, we’re not done yet…
The Absolutely Not Bad
The season Liverpool have had up to now. A domestic cup double, coming second in the League and the chance to make it three cups should they win against Real Madrid tomorrow. The Reds have been nothing short of sensational this season and their effort deserves a final cheer on which to bring down the curtain on the season.
As Liverpool fans we can only be happy. I’m sure even Man City fans would love to be in our position. The trophy cabinet is full and the shelves could come under more pressure tomorrow.
I believe the Reds have the stronger team for the Champions League final. The one thing they don’t have is the experience that tomorrow’s opponents have in abundance. Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Eden Hazard to name but a few.
All fantastic players who have done just about everything there is to do in football. I have a form belief that Liverpool have what it takes to challenge and come out on top. Let’s see. It’s the biggest game of footy I’ve seen in years and I can’t wait!
We go again for the final time this season. It’s been an absolute pleasure following these reds. One last mission 🙏🏽✈️🔴 #LFC #UCLfinal pic.twitter.com/JgE9Ra7nPy

The Ugly
All this talk of revenge against Real Madrid. Salah was quoted after the semi-final as saying that he wants revenge on the Spanish outfit for the 2018 final result.
Liverpool lost out to Los Blancos and the mercurial no. 11 was cynically injured by defender Sergio Ramos on the that fateful evening in Istanbul.
“The only issue is if that is the only motivation but that is not the case in most cases”
Not the ugliest of Ugly’s but for me, I’d rather he kept all of that to himself. Let his left foot do the talking. “The only issue is if that is the only motivation but that is not the case in most cases” said Jürgen Klopp when asked about the matter in his pre-match press conference.
In my opinion, revenge should be a quiet motivator. Not something to be shown to the opposition beforehand. As the saying goes: revenge is a dish best served cold!
