Liverpool v Manchester City – Match Preview

Having played two back-to-back away fixtures on two fronts, the Reds return to Anfield to welcome up-and-running Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. The big question is how to keep the goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland at bay.

Overview

Not so long ago, Liverpool were competing neck-and-neck with Manchester City, letting other fans absorb this battle with a great deal of excitement. This time, the scales of the meeting will be different. A 13-point gap divides the two outfits, although the Reds have one game in hand over their opponents.

The Citizens sit second, just one point behind the Gunners, who are in pole position. Meanwhile, Liverpool are occupying tenth. The main aim for them will be to chase the top four teams and climb the table.

On the other hand, the boys in the blue strip have put together a tremendous run of unbeaten games in the Premier League, they are yet to lose a single encounter in the competition this season. All eyes will be on Erling Haaland… and Liverpool’s defensive display.

Team news

Liverpool’s injury list grows. Both Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold were forced off the turf at the Emirates Stadium after suffering knee and ankle issues respectively. Also, Joel Matip will remain in the treatment room due to the injury he picked up against the London side.

Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are edging closer to a return. However, it’s unlikely we’ll see them feature against Manchester City. In addition, Naby Keita and Arthur Melo are out due to muscle problems.

The Citizens will be without three defensive-minded players. Kyle Walker, Kalvin Philips and John Stones are all sidelined. However, Pep Guardiola’s outfit will be boosted by Phil Foden’s three-year contract extension.

Head to Head

The last five meetings at Anfield in the Premier League between the two sides ended in two wins, two draws and a defeat for the mighty Reds.

Summary

The closer the game is, the more unconvinced I am about getting a good scoreline against City. Just put the thumping victory against Rangers in mid-week aside. Let’s face it, the Scots looked like they didn’t have the first idea about how they should’ve positioned themselves in the defensive areas.

Jürgen Klopp will lock horns with Pep Guardiola again on Sunday. In recent years, the rivarly delivered the highest caliber of spectacle. This time, the Citizens will hope to carry on with their unbeaten start in the Premier League, whereas the Reds with the aid of the fans’ singing voice will aim to get back on the right track.

Bear in mind, Liverpool have already defeated Man City this season, in the curtain-raiser FA Community Shield. Moreover, Pep Guardiola’s side showed signs of defensive weaknesses that the Reds may exploit with such quality up front. If I were to make a prediction, I’d go for a draw.
