Liverpool: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – EPL Gameweek #36
The Lillywhites are beaten out of sight. Despite cruising, the team ends up with a bruising. A true delight shows the future is bright. In FPL, below average is hard to believe, but I have a trick up my sleeve…!
The Good
The result against Tottenham at Anfield yesterday. Despite some shoddy defending (see the bad), the Reds were able to secure the three points.
The Reds took the lead through Mo Salah with a super header at the near post. That was followed by another Andy Robertson goal – his second in as many games to send the Reds into the break with a comfortable lead.
In the second half Liverpool doubled their lead after a Cody Gakpo header was followed by an absolute world from Harvey Elliott. An effort that seemed to put the game beyond doubt or so we thought…
The Bad
Not massively bad to be honest. It’s been a relatively quiet week for the Reds. However, I’d say the Bad this week is the way Liverpool relinquished control of the game yesterday.
Liverpool were four goals to the good and cruising when Richarlison ghosted through the Reds midfield to fire home on 72 minutes. Five minutes later, Spurs got another when Son Heung-min slotted home.
For the next 10 minutes it looked as if the visitors were on the verge of a famous comeback. Thankfully, Liverpool were able to regain control of the games as substitutes Joe Gomez and Stefan Bajcetic took a little time to get to grips with the game.
You could see that Spurs felt they were going to get something out of the game but to be fair Liverpool stuck to their task wrestling control of the fixture back from their visitors.
They even had a couple of chances to extend their lead, Mo Salah’s late strike was ruled out for off side (Darwin Núñez).
The (Sm)Ugly
Having Harvey Elliott in the Liverpool team. What a prospect. In fact, forget prospect, what a player. His goal against Tottenham yesterday was simply world class. It didn’t end there either.
Beforehand, his assist for Cody Gakpo’s goal showed he has an eye for getting the ball back and delivering quickly. A super assist in a super performance.
His display is a timely reminder, that whilst things may not always go swimmingly all of the time, we as fans have a lot to be grateful for and to look forward to.
The academy is producing no end of talent and when you look at the likes of Jayden Danns, Connor Bradley, Trey Nyoni, Bobby Clark and others, the future is looking very secure. In coming boss Arne Slot can be happy he’s taking over a well oiled and flourishing (slot) machine!
