The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – 2024/25 Gameweek #6
The Hammers shamed, and the Wolves tamed. Being top of the pile brings a smile.
The Good
Thrashing West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night at Anfield.
After falling behind to a Jarell Quansah own goal after 21 minutes, Liverpool got themselves back on level terms with the first of a Diogo Jota double a few minutes later. The hosts were thuslevel at break.
The second half however, was a masterclass in finishing as Liverpool swept their opponents aside. Another from Jota and another from Mo Salah put the game beyond their visitors. Two late goals from Cody Gapko served to underlined the Reds’ dominance.
One could argue that the score line somewhat flattered Liverpool because West Ham had their fair share of chances. That said, their efforts were more than matched by some inspired goalkeeping from Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool will now face Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round, scheduled for the week of 28th October.
The (Not) Bad
The 1-2 win away against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineaux on Saturday. An Ibrahim Konaté header and a goal from Mo Salah gave Liverpool victory.
This was though, as the score line suggests, a very tight affair. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil set his side out to frustrate their visitors, whilst looking to take advantage of occasional suspect defending to strike on the counter attack.
Their plan bore fruit as they capitalised on a lack of communication between Konaté and Allison Becker to bring themselves back level after the break. Liverpool’s pressure paid off when Diogo Jota was pushed in the Wolves box, thus earning a penalty. As usual, Salah duly converted.
The Reds took full advantage of Manchester City drawing their away game to Newcastle. As a result, Liverpool are now sitting pretty at the top of the Premiership.
The(Sm)Ugly
Simply Liverpool now being first in the table. Yes, it’s early doors, and no, the title isn’t won in September.
Results played into the Reds’ hands with Manchester City and Aston Villa both drawing. For once Liverpool seemed to deliver when it mattered. The ugly win against Wolves was just what was needed on the day.
