The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – 2024/25 Gameweeks #26 & #27
Ending the rut by kicking City‘s butt, after a passion-killer against the Villa. Striker is bitter after missing a sitter. In the premier league of fantasy, I’m all at sea.
The Good
The convincing 0-2 win over Manchester City yesterday to extend the Reds‘ lead at the top of the Premier League.
This was billed as a must-win for Liverpool in order to stamp their champions elect credentials on the rest of the league.
Arne Slot‘s men put in a performance of grit, guts and goals to underline the gulf in class between these two teams.
An early goal from Mo Salah opened the scoring on 14 minutes after a blistering start from the visitors.
Dominic Szoboszlai was on hand to fire in Salah‘s lay off after 37 minutes for what turned out to be the winner in a pulsating encounter.
In the second half Liverpool defended like lions to thwart their hosts who, but for Jeremy Doku, were a shadow of the team that has dominated in recent years.
A defensive back-five was executed fantastically by the Reds, with Ryan Gravenberch and later Wataro Endo dropping in to support the back line. Superb tactical application from Slot.
The Bad
The 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday. The Reds took the lead through Mo Salah, but were unable to hold on to their lead.
Youri Tielemans equalised for the hosts 10 minutes later, before Ollie Watkins put them ahead on the stroke of half time.
The second half was all Liverpool and when Trent Alexander-Arnold levelled in the 62nd minute, the Reds looked odds-on to get a third.
Wasteful finishing from Darwin Nuñez m wasn’t a golden opportunity to take the three points passed by. In fairness though, Jacob Ramsey fired millimetres wide with the last kick of the game.
The Ugly
Darwin Nuñez‘s face after missing a sitter in the game against Aston Villa during the week.
The Uruguay international missed a glorious chance to fire Liverpool ahead in the fixture at Villa Park.
