The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – 2024/25 UCL & EFL Gameweek
The Good this week among all the disappointment, is the fact…
The Good
The Good this week among all the disappointment, is the fact that Liverpool are still on top of the Premier League, and lead by a healthy 12 points with a goal difference of 42.
It’s important that we bear this in mind considering the week that we’ve had, and the squad with which we have achieved so much this season. Much of which is against all expectations.
Therefore, before we get too down in the dumps, let’s not forget that. The hope now of course, is that Liverpool can proceeded to take number 20 home.
The Bad
For the bad this week, I have chosen Liverpool‘s loss to PSG in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Despite a shaky first half and conceding a goal in the 12th minute Liverpool came back to put in a solid second half performance. However, despite a lion’s share of the possession and the chances – one goal ruled out for offside and hitting the post, this was not enough to prevent extra time and ultimately penalties.
Sadly for Liverpool, Darwin Nuñez and Curtis Jones were unable to convert their penalties, whereas PSG scored all of theirs to secure their passage into the quarter-finals of this season‘s competition.
A sad way to end a very promising Champions League journey this season. However, Considering the team surpassed all expectations, we can’t be too disappointed.
The Ugly
This will be the 2-1 defeat in the carabao cup final to Newcastle.
Eddie Howe and his team got their tactics spot on and done a ‘number‘ on Liverpool. A very physical no-nonsense display that left Liverpool with very few answers to the many questions posed of them.
Of course the team will be gutted as well as the fans but this game showed where Liverpool are lacking in terms of squad depth and those that played yesterday seem clearly tired and a little drained.
The irony of the of the whole situation is that Liverpool’s solitary goal was scored and assisted by Federico Chiesa Harvey Elliott respectively. Two players who it’s clear have been out of favour with boss Arne Slot.
